Your moment, My moment

Your Moment, My Moment is a photographic project exploring reality, behaviour, identity, time and space. I spend each day commuting by the Staten Island ferry, observing the tourists intruding on my daily commute. They come in groups and locate theselves near the windows and deck spaces, hoping to capture a glimpse of Statue of Liberty.

While the tourists are busy trying taking pictures, trying to capture time, they don’t realize that they are losing the essense of the tour, of the moment, as each second passes. Each photograph is their memento, proof of the experience of the trip. On the other side, I’m trying to capture their act and express curiousity about their origins, their lives, who are they? The commuters are wasting their time in contrast.

They are me. They are you. They are all of us. Photography is being used here to record a moment. A photographic archive preserves memories which only have reality through the act of taking a picture. I’m also an invader of their moment, as they are invaders to the commuters.

“Traveling can be a kind of performance piece. We can reinvent ourselves instead of our surroundings. We can surprise ourselves as well as being surprised.” - Excerpt from On The Beaten Track by Lucy R. Lippard.
